If You Don’t Go, You Don’t Get

That was the story line of a ferry porting cars back and forth on Lake Champlain from up-state New York to Vermont. The Captain was asked what drove him to cross the lake hundreds of times in all kinds of weather. His reply: “If I don’t go, I don’t get.”

His message applies to the world of Job Search as well. As you develop your strategy to obtain a new opportunity – and, notice I said “obtain” not “seek” – it is important to remember that the key motivating force in any job search is YOU. Your resume can be prepared by and expert. Contact lists can be generated through various sources. E-mails can be sent by anyone. But, no one can replace you when it comes to making direct contacts with potential referrals or hiring managers.

I receive many resumes from resume writers “representing” their clients. What a turn-off. The same goes for inquiries from other than the personal candidate. Do yourself a favor – use the experts where you can to ensure that your job search campaign is really ready. Then do it. Personally execute your plan and make it easy for people to reach you. If you don’t go, you don’t get….
