Is Having a Personal Website Narcissistic?

I was asked this question at a recent Online Personal Branding presentation by someone in the audience. After pausing a few seconds to contemplate an answer, I replied with an emphatic “no.”

I went on to explain that in today’s environment, we all have to assume the title of Chief Marketing Officer for our own career. While marketing may not come naturally to many of us, if we don’t take it upon ourselves, odds are no one else will.

Self-promotion is not about getting in people’s faces, shouting from rooftops, or making claims that have no basis in fact. Rather, it’s about communicating your unique value and demonstrating how you can make a difference. Self-promotion relies on the golden rule that says it’s better to give than receive.

Times are changing. While the notion of having your own website may seem narcissistic on the surface, it really is about using today’s tools to reach your target audience and communicate your personal brand. The digital world is providing numerous opportunities for each of us to become effective marketers.

The question isn’t whether having a personal website is narcissistic. The real question is whether you are ready to promote yourself to Chief Marketing Officer for the brand called “YOU.”
