Considering a career shift? Channel the nineties pop group. Spice Girls, and answer an important question: “What do you want, really, really want,” from your career?
Your first step is to determine, “Is my career unfulfilling or my place of employment not satisfying? If it is the first response, you should consider switching careers. If it is the second, consider where you would like to work in the same field.
Once you decide to make a career change, begin by reassessing your values. Ask yourself what makes you get out of bed in the morning with a sense of purpose? Be honest: if you are currently working for a non-profit, do you feel you can do good and do well? If you are in a corporate environment, would a switch to consulting make sense? What ignites your passion?
Next comes basic considerations.
- Consider your skill set. What skills you are transportable to your new career? What skills do you need to enhance or develop? Now is the time to enroll in a program that can help you enhance the possibilities for advancement.
- It’s not where you start, but where you finish. Are you ok with starting over? Can you grow in your new career? You will need to prove yourself before branching off into the really exciting part of your new career.
- The money v. lifestyle equation should be considered. Be realistic about what you can expect both in the beginning of your new career and over time.
- Networking is important. Take the time to learn about the business you are entering and find the people who can provide support.
Nothing worth doing comes easy. But if you really want a career change, you owe it to yourself to make it happen.
